New lifeboat for S/S Ejdern

The association has for some years planned to replace the present lifeboat or actually man-over-board boat with a new one made of wood with the same appearance as the one the ship had in the early 20th century. The problem was to raise the funds to be able to realize the project. We found that The Swedish National Heritage Board had means to subsidies to different forms of working life museums. We sent in an application and the association was granted a subsidy of 50.000 Swedish kronor to let build a new lifeboat in wood

The Boat has during the winter 2003-2004 been built at Erikssons Båtbyggeri AB at Södra Ingmarsö. The shipyard is run by the brothers Per-Oskar and Hans (picture above) since the middle 60ies.

The delivery of the new lifeboat!

April 16, 2004 it was time to fetch the lifeboat. It was delivered by boat to Sättra jetty at Ingmarsö by the Eriksson brothers. Åkeke Persson and Micke Eilert, that had borrowed a truck for that purpose, meet them and the boat could be lifted to the truck bed.
Then they drove with the boat to our premises near the Södertälje lock where it was unloaded. Saturday April 17 the boat was carried down to the water and launched. Then we rowed over to Ejdern and the boat was lifted onboard.
The next weekend the stands that came with the boat was mounted on the afterdeck roof and painted white. It certainly looks nicer with a "real" boat, built of wood, than the old plastic one, don't you think?

In the end of the summer the lifeboat finally was complete when the boat cover was delivered and mounted on the boat.
