Safety rafts and lead. Två big investments have been done on Ejdern during this year. Two safety rafts were bought for 76 000 SEK (8 000 $) the pair and the keel was loaded with lead for more than 27 000 SEK (2 800 $). Including extra inspection rounds these investments mounted to more than 140 000 SEK (15 000 $)! - In October last year there was a new law about safety rafts Åke, who have been planning and administrating these jobs, tells me. The regular sailing was finished, but chartertrips in October and November, and trips to Stockholm early December and on New Year´s Eve for the turn of the millennium made it necessary for Åke to borrow two rafts during the autumn.
Right position. The long awaited life rafts (2) were delivered and could be put in their place right away. The week after Midsummer it was done and approved. The new flat packed rafts are placed on the roof of the quarter deck. When they are heaved over board they are automaticly blown up and turned right. Each raft takes 50 people and contains certain emergency equipment. These rafts are required if ships are to take any passengers at all. Next spring the rafts will be checked for the first time and will then be every other year.
What more inspections are there on Ejdern? Well, the boiler is checked twice every year, Åke tells. A visual check when there is no water in the boiler and a check when the boiler is fired and running. - When we had her (Ejdern) up last autumn we found the boiler was damaged on a small spot which we welded thight and then we asked for another check up and everything was OK. The sea inspection of the ship (the hull) takes place every other year. The next inspection is planned, at the earliest, next spring when she is up on the Ragnhildsborg shipyard. And the usual preparations are done during the winter. As you perhaps have noticed Ejdern is wrapped in tarpaulins. The big job this year is to lay a new upper deck and with tarpaulins and a hot air fan the job can be done even in cold weather.
