Södertälje is a town with a long history and is situated by the canal that connects Lake Mälaren with The Baltic Sea. The town is particularly characterised by its beautiful scenery and wildlife, by AstraZeneca, Scania, its active sporting life and great ethnic diversity.
In the heart of the town you will find the popular attractions; the permanent interactive science exhibition, "Tom Tits Experiment", the "Sydpoolen" adventure pool and the open-air museum, TorekälIberget.
The town has a wealth of culture on offer including art galleries, libraries, theatres and cinemas.
Approximately 30 km north of the town lies Taxinge Slott, a manor house surrounded by fantastic scenery and wildlife. Södertälje also has some of Sweden 's best fishing waters and parts of the beautiful Sörmlandsleden hiking trail lead through our municipality. Discover Södertälje!


Södertälje is in a strategic location where two motorways and two mainline railways pass through the town.
Shipping is intensive on the Södertälje Canal. 20 000 boats pass though our lock every year.
The commuter trains to Stockholm depart four times per hour, and the journey takes no more than forty minutes. If you choose to travel by car, the journey will take 20 minutes.

Historical dates

1070

In the book on missionary history in the Nordic countries, Telge is included by name for the first time.

1378

Telge received its town charter.

1622

Tälje became Södertälje.

1630,

1650 and 1719, the town was the victim of major fires.

1819

The Södertälje Canal was opened.

1837

Mrs. Grevesmuhl started to bake Södertäljekringlor, the town 's characteristic pretzel-shaped pastries.

1870

Södertälje had 2 150 inhabitants.

1880

The arrival of the telephone in the town, and a few years later it became possible to ring between Södertälje and Stockholm.

1891

The limited company, Vabis, established a factory in Södertälje to manufacture vehicles.

1903

Vabis built the first massproduced Swedish cars.

1906

The steamer S/S Ejdem was brought to Södertälje.

1950

The town had 25 315 inhabitants.

1964

The steamer S/S Ejdem was about to be sunk in the deep waters south of Södertälje, But was saved in the last minute and moved to Stockholm for a couple of years.

1971

The new Mälarbron Bridge was completed.

1976

The steamer S/S Ejdem was brought back to Södertälje.

1978

Kulturhuset Luna, the arts centre, was opened.

1985

Södertälje Sportklubb won the Swedish ice hockey championships.

1989

The Sydpoolen adventure pool was opened after comprehensive rebuilding work of the old Täljebadet baths.

1995

Södertälje Syd, the new railway station for long-distance trains, and the Igelstabron railway bridge were opened.

1998

Björn Borg played John McEnroe in the Scania rink.

1999

The town had 75 939 inhabitants.
